This is a super slaw recipe from an Amish woman in Ohio, and I will warn you, it is addictive! That is why this is called "Crack Slaw." This recipe is a little different than some of the other "Crack Slaws" out there, but this is amazing!

I don't really even like slaw, but I like this slaw. I've never been a huge slaw fan. As an adult, a family member makes a tasty "broccoli slaw", which I kind of like. I like the homemade versions of slaws more than like the scoop you get in a styrofoam cup at KFC. Don't like those much.

Amish slaws tend to be pretty easy to make and full of flavor because they generally use fresh ingredients.

🥬 The Amish and Slaw

The Amish do make slaw. Amish slaw is a traditional dish that is typically made with shredded cabbage, carrots, and a vinegar-based dressing. Slaw is easy to make, cheap to make, is a nice colorful dish, feeds a crowd, and is simple to transport, all of which makes it a great fit for the Amish.

There are many different recipes for Amish slaw, but they all share a few common ingredients. These ingredients include:

  • Shredded cabbage
  • Carrots
  • Vinegar
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Celery seed
  • Mustard

Some Amish slaw recipes also include other ingredients, such as onions, celery, and bell peppers. The list of ingredients for an Amish slaw is pretty minimal.

I have never made a boiled dressing for slaw, never, ever made slaw without using a mayo base. This is an excellent slaw as we can taste the cabbage, onion, and peppers. It appeared off to add the cup of sugar to the cut up veggies, and then add a mostly boiled vinegar dressing, but it works!

Instead of green peppers, we do not care for, used red, orange, and yellow peppers, and used apple cider vinegar. o another recipe we will use again!

As Barbara said you can vary the peppers and you can use apple cider vinegar or white vinegar, I'd probably stick with the cider. And you can use the recipe as posted below as a "base" and add other stuff to it, such as garlic, ginger, sesame seeds, red pepper flakes, or green onions. A lot of the typical crack slaw recipe has ground beef, but this does not. I suppose you could add it to the coleslaw mix. Sesame oil is something else you can add here if you want.

THIS is the super amazing "slaw sauce." I'd recommend keeping this as is because it is perfect! Bring it to a boil over medium-high heat. If you must add something else to the sauce, a little bit of soy sauce or sriracha sauce is the way to go.

Pour the sauce over the slaw and then toss to coat evenly and it is amazing! For the best flavor, stick in the refrigerator overnight before serving. You'll have a super Instagram or Facebook worthy slaw!

Amish "Crack" Slaw

This is a colorful, crispy, delicious refreshing slaw that is addictive!

Ingredients

  • 1 medium head cabbage, cored and shredded
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 peppers, finely chopped
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon celery seed
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon prepared mustard
  • 1 tablespoon oil

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, toss together the cabbage, onions, bell peppers, and sugar.

  • Set aside a large saucepan for the vinegar, salt, celery seeds, mustard, and oil.

  • Bring the saucepan's contents to a boil and let cook for three minutes.

  • Once it has cooled completely, you can pour it over your slaw and toss to coat thoroughly.

  • For the best possible flavor, refrigerate overnight.
