Inspections of passenger cars, light trucks, and several other types of vehicles registered in NJ are required every two years. Owners/operators can have the inspection service performed for free at NJ MVC Inspection Centers or for a fee of approximately $100 at licensed private facilities.

In NJ non-commercial vehicles are only required to pass “emissions” inspections. Basically meaning that if your check engine light is on, you should have it fixed prior to getting your vehicle inspected or you will fail and have to have the vehicle fixed regardless to pass inspection.

Note: If the tires are equipped with an automatic tire inflation system (ATIS) or tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that has hoses connected to the tire valve stems, you need only mention that tire pressure is monitored and adjusted by an automatic system and inspect that it is working properly.

Inspection no longer inspects for that kind of thing, basically just papers and emissions, but you are still responsible for it (they don't inspect for broken lights anymore, just things required federally, but you still get a ticket for a broken light).
