Learning how to make fresh homemade guacamole is so easy and so much better than store-bought dip!
This one was shared with me by a friend so, of course, I had to share it with all of you!
I do love a hot dip, and this 10-minute Mexican cheese dip is one of my favorites, but in the summer, there is nothing better than a cold Mexican appetizer dip full of fresh, flavorful ingredients and a little bit of spice!
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- It’s made with a handful of ingredients and comes together in minutes.
- A versatile spicy guacamole dip that is perfect for tailgate parties, game day parties, the holidays, family gatherings, and more.
- You can adjust the spice level to your liking.
- It is deliciously creamy and zesty, especially if you love a little heat!
Cooking Tips & Variations
- For extra spice, you can forego the fresh tomatoes and use a can of Rotel. It comes with green chiles, which can be hot, medium, or mild.
- Use more or less jalapeno depending on your taste preferences.
- Wear gloves while dicing your hot peppers! If you mistakenly touch your eyes with your hands, it’ll burn. So, be careful.
- Easily double the recipe to serve a larger crowd.
- If you like a garlicky guacamole, feel free to add minced garlic to yours.

- Avocados: You’ll need about 4-5 ripe avocados, cut in half with the pit removed. Look for avocados that are ripe but not turning brown. They should be slightly soft, but not mushy.
- Onion: Use chopped white or red onion. I love red onions but use what you’ve got.
- Tomatoes: I use fresh tomatoes that I dice, but if you want a short cut go ahead and use canned diced tomatoes.
- Lime Juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice tastes much better than from a bottle.
- Jalapeno: Finely chopped. Remove as many of the seeds as you can. The more you leave in the spicier it will be. I use half the amount if I am making this for kids.
- Cilantro: Chopped fresh herbs are always a nice way to brighten up a creamy dip!
- Salt and Pepper: To taste.

Ways to Enjoy Spicy Guacamole
This dip can be served with all your favorite dippers! We love it with tortilla chips but it’s also great with crackers, bread, and a veggie platter.
We use it over homemade ground beef nachos, in burritos, as a topping for tacos, buffalo chicken taquitos, enchiladas, and quesadillas.
Sometimes I’ll even spread it on toast!
Recipe FAQs
How do you pick good, ripe avocados?
First you want to look at it. You should not see any wrinkled, bruised, or mushy areas.
Then you want to feel it. It should have a slight give when you press into it, but not so much that it leaves a finger indent.
Last, you can test it by gently removing the little knob at the end. If it comes off easily, it is ripe.
Can you make guacamole with lemon instead of lime?
Absolutely! While lime is more widely used in classic guacamole recipes, you can certainly use lemon instead.
It’ll give it the same citrusy, zesty brightness, with just a slight variation in flavor.
How do you keep guacamole from turning brown?
The key is to serve it immediately before it has a chance to brown. If this isn’t possible, the lime juice will help to prevent browning, but it doesn’t hurt to squeeze a little extra overtop before you refrigerate it. Cover it with plastic wrap.
Some people also say that placing the pit into the middle of the guacamole helps to prevent browning. While others say this is not true. Might be worth a shot!
Either way, if your guacamole does turn brown, just scrape off the surface layer. Underneath should still be nice and green. Then, give it a mix and enjoy.
Can you freeze guacamole?
You can freeze guacamole for up to 3 months. This is a great make-ahead dip to keep around for last-minute guests or when you need a party appetizer.

Notes
- Use ripe avocados - they should be slightly soft to the touch.
- Don't overmix the ingredients - a slightly chunky texture is ideal.
- Use fresh ingredients, such as cilantro, onions, and tomatoes, to enhance the flavor.
- Don't forget to add salt - it's essential for bringing out the flavors in the guacamole.
- If you like a bit of heat, add some finely chopped jalapeño or serrano peppers.
- Cover the guacamole with plastic wrap, pressing the wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole to prevent air from getting in, which will help keep it fresh.
Hope these tips help you make some lip-smacking guacamole!
