State Thursday, September 7, 2006 Page 5A The Tribune, Jackson County, Ind. Charity for survivors of fallen officers gets $1 million donation Winters said the donation should allow it to find more survivors and expand support services. "You see, we all share the fear that one day our loved ones and everything he or she stood for will be forgotten," she said. "Concerns for Police Survivors will not let that happen." People at the memorial adjacent to the Statehouse cheered and clapped as the donation was announced. Carl Cook, the son of Bloomington billionaire and Cook Group CEO William Cook, said people should be grateful for the dangerous work police officers do, and that was one reason the donation was made.

"I would certainly encourage other individuals and other corporations to think about contributing also because this is a very, very important cause," he said. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) A charity that sponsored a bike ride in which two police officers were killed "along a western Indiana highway received a $1 million donation- Wednesday from Bloomington-based medical device maker Cook Group. The donation to the Indiana Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors came 15 days after Indiana State Police Sgt. Gary Dudley, 51, and former Lake County Police Chief Gary Martin, 63, were killed Aug. 22 when a support van spun into them after it was hit by a box truck.

The officers, who died on primarily on the two-week bike ride over the past four years to generate an annual budget of about $30,000, said Molly Winters, the group's executive director. Her husband, Muncie police officer Gregg Winters, died after a 1990 shooting. The group holds monthly support meetings for survivors and pays expenses for some to attend an annual event in Washington in which fallen officers are honored and the national chapter of COPS provides counseling and other services. The Indiana chapter has contacted about 600 survivors in the state so far. that Gary obviously believed in both Garys believed very strongly in and I feel like their mission has been accomplished today," Carolyn Dudley said.

"The citizens of Indiana have just been tremendous. I always loved living in Indiana, but the support has just been overwhelming even before today with the Cook Group," she said. The charity plans to use the donation to create an endowment and use the interest to expand support services, including counseling. The Indiana chapter, formed in 1998, has relied Indiana 63 about 50 miles north of Terre Haute, were among 10 cyclists riding to raise money for the Indiana chapter of COPS, a support group for relatives of police officers killed in the line of duty. Dudley had organized the trek.

His wife, Carolyn, said she was "very overwhelmed" after the donation was announced at the Indiana Police and Fire Memorial across from the Statehouse before dozens of people, including police officers, Gov. Mitch Daniels and members of the charity. (AP) Holiday World plans to add a seven-story water slide as part of a $4.5 million expansion project of the southern Indiana theme park for next year. The new Bakuli slide will cost about $1.6 million and feature four-passenger tubes for families to ride together, park officials announced Wednesday.

Holiday World expects to top the 1 million attendance mark for the first time in its 60-year history by the time this year's season ends in early October and hopes for 5 percent growth in 2007, said Will Koch, the park's president. The expansion project will also include construction of another new ride and a new restaurant for the park's Thanksgiving section, which will offer cafeteria-style turkey dinners with outdoor seating for 300 people. 1' 1 Metal detectors approved for Statehouse SEYMOUR ELKS CLUB September 23, 2008 Golf begins at 12:00 Noon Dinner and Silent Auction begin at 5:30 p.m. Fee: $60.00 per person (includes golf dinner) Dinner only: $15.00 per person For Information or to sign up please contact: Seymour Elks Club Golf Pro Shop or Rick Stewart (812) 498-0738 INDIANAPOLIS (AP) A state panel has approved new security measures for the Statehouse that will require visitors to pass through metal detectors and limit public access to two entrances. Metal detectors also will be installed at the neighboring state office buildings under the plan approved Wednesday by the Indiana Counter-Terrorism and Security Council.

The Indiana State Police and the state Department of Administration are to implement the plan in the coming months. The new steps were recommended by a committee of the security council, which said the Statehouse and adjoining offices "present highly visible and vulnerable targets for terrorist and other activities whose purpose is to compromise the functioning of state government."
